Introduction to Gaming Systems

The first gaming system was developed as soon as people started playing games of chance for profit. People have always attempted to develop methods to beat the odds, but have never succeeded.

Fact, the odds can not be beat.
No system that can change the odds of a fair game.

"
there is a reason why casinos have nice carpeting"
1958 John Scarne

Always remember: Casino's have a built in "house-edge".
Casinos do not pay "true odds". The house edge insures that the casino will always win in the long run. The "house-edge" is built into all bets on all casino games.

What can you do about the "house-edge"?
Use systems.
1. Use a money management system
2. Use a bet selection method
3. Know when to quit

The casino will always win in the long run:
"the long run" for a casino is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with thousands of bets being placed each day. The casino will win the majority of these bets. What about the hundreds of bets the casino does not win? Don't play against the casino for the "long run". Use a bet selection method to identify windows of opportunity, make a little money and QUIT! (for at least the day)! If you keep playing, you will lose your money: The casino will always win in the long run.

Tips for Quitting a Gaming Session:
1. Set a maximum loss for a gaming session before play. If you lose your maximum, quit.

2. If your winning, but it's a struggle, quit.

3. If your winning and having easy runs, play until you lose a bet or two then quit. This is the hardest tip to employ, but also the most important.

Money Management:
A money management system is a method of placing a series of bets using specific amounts. These systems are commonly called "progressions". The objective of a progression is to win one or more bets in a series. The advantage of a progression is they allow for the natural occurrence of losses. I.E. you can lose one or more bets in a progression and still make a profit. The disadvantage of a progression, is that the amount of a single lost "series", can wipe out the profit of multiple gaming sessions.

Example:
Your bet series: three bets of escalating values $5, $10, $20
Your bet______: Roulette 2 to 1 payout (e.g. bet 5, win 10)
Total Risk_____: $35 (5+10+20)
Target Profit___: $10 to $25

If you win the 1rst bet of $5:
You go home with $10 profit.
If you win the 2nd bet $10__: You go home with $15 profit.
If you win the 3rd bet $20__: You go home with $25 profit.
Profits increase as the bet value increases. You can lose two bets in a row, win the third and make a profit!

Compare the above to successive bets of the same value.
Example:
Your bet series: three bets of $5
Your bet_____: Roulette 2 to 1 payout (e.g. bet 5, win 10)
Total Risk____: $15 (5+5+5)
Target Profit__: $5 to 10 (but you must win one of the first two bets)

If you win the 1rst bet of $5:
You go home with $10 profit.
If you win the 2nd bet $5__: You go home with $5 profit.
If you win the 3rd bet $5__: You go home with $0 profit.
Note: profits DECREASE with each bet in the series. This is not a good thing. The most you can win is $10.

You can learn all about systems from Frank Barstow's book "Beat the Casino". This is a very good book with many examples of money management systems. It's also fun and easy to read. Cheap too!.

Bet selection methods:
Over the years many different bet selection methods have been developed. There is no perfect method to always place a winning bet. When outcome is based on true random number selection, it is impossible to predict.

There are simple methods of probability that can improve ones win to loss ratio. When bet selection methods are employed along with a Money-Management system, one can usually expect good results (as long as you know when to quit).

"Hot" and "Cold":
One of the oldest bet selection methods: "hot" or "cold".

To play "hot": bet the outcome will be the same as the last outcome.
To play "cold": bet the outcome will not be the same as the last outcome

Many bet selection methods have been developed. In his book
Beat the Casino, Frank Barstow outlines a wonderful example of a system that he has developed.

Advanced bet selection methods:
Technology has opened many opportunities to create advanced systems. While traditional systems can be learned and used in actual casino play, advanced systems normally contain too many calculations and must be done with a computer. Now that personal computers, the Internet, and on-line casinos have become popular, it is possible to for anyone to use advanced systems.

Advanced systems normally use one or more combinations of the following:
-> Traditional Systems
-> Artificial Intelligence
-> Expert Rule Systems
-> Advanced statistics and probability
-> Elliott Wave Analysis

Advanced Play4Roulette systems are available from Play4Games.
